A lot of bullet journalers will prefer to use a travelers journal instead of a typical hardcover bullet journal. Today I want to show you why you might do this, what to use, and help you find the perfect cover for your bullet journal.

Instead of filling up a journal and then buying a whole new one some bullet journalers opt to use travelers journals. These journals allow you to switch out the inserts and keep one cover. You can also have several different inserts.

This would allow to keep yearly trackers and logs in one booklet, collections in another, and then your monthly and weeklies in a third. By keeping your journal like this you allow yourself to just switch out one insert often. It’s a genius way to handling your bullet journaling.

Additionally, there are some really amazing covers. Leather, fun, easy, durable, you are sure to find one that works well for your lifestyle. While the covers can be a bit on the pricey side it’s worth it knowing you don’t have to transfer collections or future logs. Finally, the price on the additional inserts is super affordable.

I prefer to use the traditional hard cover bullet journals because of how I store them. However, it is super tempting to switch to the traveler journals just because it’s more pages that I can use to doodle and fill in.

Different Ways To Use Travelers Journals

I want to discuss the different ways you can use travelers journals for bullet journaling. This way you can make a decision on if the travelers journals would work well for you.

Journaling in Travelers Journals

The first way you can use an insert book is as a journal. You can write about your days as they happen and then switch out the insert when it’s full of all your ideas. Having an insert specific for journaling is a great way to pass down everything that you’ve done in your life. Your thoughts, dreams, and feelings live on in these journal entries.

Using an insert to plan out your life if another bullet journal aspect that you can use in your travelers journals. As we know the different planning spreads that we use in our bullet journals are the quickest way to fill out a bullet journal.

By using handy inserts instead you can plan out your month, weeks and days easily, then once it’s full just switch it out for a new one. All your other inserts hold things you want to use for a longer period of time but you only have the most recent plans with you. Imagine creating all your collections and rarely having to transfer and recreate those collections again. You can have collections through an entire year without issue and be able to refer to them easily. You can fill in an entire insert and then have it with your throughout the life of your travelers journal or until you want to create a next one.

Quote Collection Pages in Travelers Journals

One of the biggest complaints from Bullet Journalers is how they fill up their bullet journals so quickly with quote pages and designs. If you enjoy doodling, hand lettering, or just creating beautiful pages this can fill up a journal faster than your planners. Being able to switch out inserts allows you to keep your beautiful designs and create new owns quickly and without needing to search through to find them.

Doodle Journaling in Travelers Journals

If you like creating spreads of doodles again you may be filling up your regular bullet journal quickly. Having a specific insert for doodle journaling allows you to fill one insert and switch it out for a new one without disturbing your planner or needing to transfer collections.

this article, so I may be a hundred years too late commenting ?. Thank you so much for this post! I am brand new to bullet journaling (since Aug 2018) & have been searching high & low for info on this very subject! Was so excited when your article showed up on my Pinterest feed. I’m going with a traveler’s notebook as my bullet journal for 2019 & am unsure of myself. So your post is so VERY helpful & I feel more confident in the direction I’m taking because of it. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!?????? BTW, I’m going with a 9×6 cover, hp premium 32 paper, printed with square grid, 8 1/2 x 11 folded in half to 5 1/2 x 8 1/2. I love the look of dot grid, but still have trouble writing straight & seeing the dots. Don’t laugh, but those dots move, like a marquee! OK, go ahead & laugh, but they do, ?. I couldn’t find square grids in my size, so just made my own in Excel. So happy to find you & what a great resource you are for newbies! Thanks again & look forward to more info using traveler’s notebook as bullet journal – subscribed & following on Pinterest.

    1. I’m glad you found this helpful. I recommend sticking to a simple design at first with any newer bullet journaler. Make sure you get a book for practicing in this will help you build up any creativity and skills. Also from time to time I still use stencils. Stickers, washi tape, and stamps are all popular among bullet journalers too. Just stick with it. Bullet Journaling has completely helped me be more productive while being an excellent creative outlet.
