Since we plan the rest of our lives in our bullet journals why not have a bullet journal meal plan too. Meal planning is taking time to plan out your meals for a week, couple weeks, or a month ahead. It helps with sticking to budgets, grocery shopping, reminding for defrosting, and keeping you on track with a diet.
Meal planning is essential for busy people. When life has you running around it’s important to take a little bit of time to plan out what you will eat. I know all too well that when we don’t do meal planning it leads to eating out more and spending way too much money on take out.
Before we get started here is a list of my recommended supplies.
Recommended ProductsFrom time to time the Scribbles that Matter Journal is sold out on Amazon. When this happens third party sellers will try to sell the journal for an insane amount of money. DO NOT BUY THAT! Scribbles that Matter should be back in stock soon. My second favorite journal is the Essentials Dot Matrix, though I warn you the pages on this one are thinner and bleeding and shadows show up on opposite sides. However, it's a decent cheap journal if you are in a pinch and just want to get started.

Why You Should Have A Bullet Journal Meal Plan
Meal planning is a great time and energy saver. You can let your family know ahead of time what’s for dinner and you never have the what’s for dinner argument. By creating a list of all your meals for the week ahead of time you know what you need to shop for, what you need to cook, and what you need to defrost.
Additionally, if you plan your meals you can also do minor prep work before hand. So if you know you are doing a Fajita Sheet Pan Dinner you can chop all the ingredients add seasoning and put it in a Ziplock bag for freezing until you are ready to use it.
You can plan out a week or two, or even a full month of dinners so that you can stay on track. Additionally, if you know what you are cooking for an entire month you can plan out your shopping to make sure you are getting the best price and stock up ahead of time on the ingredients.
Ways To Meal Plan in Your Bullet Journal
There are several ways you can use your bullet journal to meal plan. I currently have a box in my weekly spreads for meal planning. I just fill out each week and add meals as family members request them.
In November and December, due to the holidays, I will actually be planning out my meals for a month in advance. This is because it will help me plan our holiday dinners and make sure I am getting the best prices possible for all our goods.
Keep a Bullet Journal Collection of Pantry Goods
To make grocery shopping easier you can keep a couple of collections. These collections will help make things easier for you to shop.
If you have a list of must have pantry items you can easily create your grocery list by checking to make sure you have stock. This prevents you needing to go back to the grocery store for more items.
Keep a Bullet Journal Collection of Refrigerated Must Haves
Just like with a Pantry Collection if you have a list of goods for your refrigerated goods you can easily make sure you have stock of the necessary items your family needs. Get rid of those extra bread and milk runs when a storm arrives by making sure you are always stocked.
Create a Favorite Recipe Bullet Journal Collection
Another must have collection for meal planning is a favorite recipes collection. Here you can mark down recipes that your family loves and use it to help plan your weekly meal plan. I would only use the name of the recipes and keep a separate recipe book that has details.
The more you make the recipes your family loves the easier it will be for you to use this collection for meal planning and grocery shopping. Make sure you keep this updated regularly so you always have something to choose from.
Plan For Eating Out or Take Out
We all know eating at home is so much cheaper than eating out or eating take out, except sometimes we just don’t feel like cooking. Make one day a week or two days a month mandatory no cook days.
Doing this will give you something to look forward to. You cook for 6 or 13 days then you get the reward of ordering out. It saves you money and aggravation and gives you a reward. It’s absolutely worth the effort.

Test out all the different ways to do meal planning in your bullet journal until you find a way that works well for you. This also helps you keep your schedule in mind. If you are super busy one week you might consider doing a few crock pot meals so that you can dump and cook. Sheet pan recipes and Instant Pot recipes make for easy meals too so you can get more done.
